Emerging transport professionals can secure funding for innovation and research projects through the Future Transport Visions Group’s 2024/25 competition, but they need to act fast, explains FTVG committee member and mentor Deni Krevesic

The deadline for emerging professionals to get involved in the Future Transport Visions Group’s (FTVG) 2024/2025 competition is 26 April 2024. The competition offers a unique opportunity for individuals and groups with fewer than ten years of experience in the transport industry to secure funding, mentoring and support in delivering research projects to unlock new ideas and deliver new tools for the benefit of the wider sector.

FTVG is a volunteer-led research initiative funded by the Rees Jeffreys Road Fund. By providing a platform for individuals and teams to showcase innovative solutions, regardless of their organisations and geographical locations, FTVG aims to encourage the growth of emerging professionals by connecting like-minded individuals.

This year's competition features six categories to help participants choose areas that closely align with their career aspirations and interests:

  • Decarbonisation and Sustainable Transport

  • Engagement and Behaviour Change

  • Modelling and Appraisal Processes

  • Future Transport Modes and Technologies

  • Intelligent Transport Systems

  • Emerging Trends (Other “out of the box” thinking)

Although the entry deadline is fast approaching, potential participants at this stage need only submit an expression of interest, which they can do by visiting FTVG’s website.

FTVG program overview: navigating the competition timeline

Supported projects will have a duration of a year (see info graphic below). The competition process begins with an expression of interest, followed by online collaborative forums scheduled for May. These are platforms designed to further develop ideas and form teams around common transport challenges with a view to then developing projects, papers, or products.

Once teams have been established, they have the opportunity to secure funding by submitting a detailed proposal, including an abstract, methodology, and budget.

Teams that obtain funding will have eight months to complete their project under the guidance and mentorship of an industry expert. The competition concludes with presentations at a professional conference in May 2025 and the announcement of the Outstanding Project award, a significant accolade that recognises the most innovative and impactful work.

Purpose of the competition: fostering future leaders

FTVG is dedicated to driving the future of the transport sector by empowering emerging professionals to develop practical solutions to current challenges. The initiative not only aims to advance the knowledge and skills of these professionals but also strives to create a lasting impact that will benefit future generations in the transportation industry.

With the support of a group of transport leaders acting as committee members, as well as a steering group, FTVG helps bring these ideas to realisation, evaluating the impacts of each project and awarding the most outstanding ones. This programme emphasises a commitment to promoting the next generation of transportation professionals, equipping them to address complex current transport issues.
