Network Rail awards £1.3bn in Scottish improvement contracts

Network Rail has announced the five companies that will share the £1.3 billion worth of contracts to deliver improvement work in in Scotland under the new Scotland Civils Framework.

The five-year contracts cover programmes for buildings, civils, structures, earthworks, drainage, renewals, and enhancement across Scotland’s rail network.

The five companies that have agreed contracts are:

  • Taziker Industrial

  • AmcoGiffen

  • STORY

  • QTS

  • VolkerRail

Network Rail Scotland’s Managing Director, Liam Sumpter, said, “We’re investing up to £1.3bn in these framework contracts to maintain and improve our infrastructure across Scotland.

“The awarding of these contracts will help us continue to deliver a railway that is safe and reliable for passengers and freight.

“We’re excited to once again be partnering with Taziker, AmcoGiffen, STORY and QTS and we’re looking forward to welcoming VolkerRail onto Scotland’s Railway family.”

For VolkerRail, this agreement marks the first time that it has been awarded a major contract in Scotland, after regularly delivering projects in England and Wales. This new contract will see the company delivering up to £150 million worth of signalling, power, and communication work.

General civil renewal projects will be the focus of Taziker’s contract - worth up to £150 million, with this including preventative structural repairs and culvert renewals to ensure that the network is more resilient to the effects of climate change and flooding.

AmcoGiffen and STORY will both see up to £730 million of work in buildings and construction as part of their lot. Covering renewal work on structures such as tunnels, underbridges, and coastal defences, the work will also include AmcoGiffen assessing and repairing 3.75 miles worth of coastal protection along the River Forth, whilst STORY will be carrying out a scour protection programme on the Fillan Viaduct on the West Highland Line.

QTS’ contract will see a £420 million contract dedicated to the completion of crucial geotechnical and draining renewal work to improve asset conditions and fighting against the impact of climate change. Included in this work will be the completion of earthworks and track drainage near Cumbernauld, and the upgrading of on- and off-track drainage near Falkirk.

Director of Specialist Businesses at VolkerRail, Niall McCreanor, commented, “VolkerRail has extensive experience in signalling, telecoms and power renewals, and enhancements, and we have spent considerable time building our presence in Scotland to better understand the needs of Scotland’s railway, to ensure we can provide the best possible service.

“We look forward to working collaboratively with Network Rail and Scotland’s Railway to deliver efficient outputs in line with their key strategic themes.”
