Andy Street narrowly defeated in West Midlands mayoral election

Andy Street’s defeat to Labour in the West Midlands mayoral election provided the only shock result in last week’s voting.

After a partial recount it was confirmed Labour's Richard Parker beat the former Mayor of the West Midlands by 1,508 votes. Arguably Street is the most high-profile victim of tanking Tory support in the May elections.

Directly elected mayors to combined authorities have powers over transport, housing, planning, and policing

The results for the Mayor of London, nine of Combined Authority mayors, and the Mayor of Salford are:

  • Tees Valley, Conservative Ben Houchen re-elected

  • York and North Yorkshire, Labour's David Skaith

  • North East, Labour's Kim McGuinness

  • East Midlands, Labour's Claire Ward

  • Liverpool City Region, Labour's Steve Rotheram re-elected

  • South Yorkshire, Labour's Oliver Coppard re-elected

  • Greater Manchester, Labour's Andy Burnham re-elected

  • West Yorkshire, Labour's Tracey Brabin re-elected

  • London, Labour's Sadiq Khan re-elected

  • Salford, Labour's Paul Dennett re-elected

  • West Midlands, Labour's Richard Parker defeats Conservative incumbent Andy Street

Some are newly created mayoralties voting for the first time. This year's mayoral elections were conducted under the first past the post electoral system for the first time.
