Liftango ridesharing app supports IKEA’s global employee carpool trial

IKEA employees across the world are commencing an international carpool trial, designed to encourage employees to create sustainable commuting habits with the assistance of a ridesharing app.

The customised Ride2Work app was designed and built by carpooling technology provider, Liftango, which aims to reduce the number of cars on the road by collaborating with companies pursuing zero-emission goals. IKEA aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the total value chain by 50% by 2030.

Within the Ride2Work app, employees can track their impact by monitoring CO2 reduction, kilometres or miles driven, and CO2 offsets by planting trees. The app also ensures that COVID safety requirements are adhered to by users, with an easy way to assist in COVID contact tracing should the need arise.

According to IKEA, the ride-sharing app is an answer to providing safe and sustainable commuting alternatives. Many employees, it says, are still hesitant about using public transport in the aftermath of the Covid pandemic. The company says that commuting through carpooling to stores will give employees peace of mind and strengthen sustainability efforts through ride-sharing.

Ride2Work trials will begin in stores across Italy, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Canada and Australia, expanding to more than 500 IKEA stores worldwide.

IKEA also says it will also look at ways of making the technology available to customers.
