New traffic management software helps TfL reduce pollution and congestion
Transport for London (TfL) has rolled out new software which upgrades its management of road accidents, traffic congestion and roadworks
The new system, implemented by French digital transformation firm Sopra Steria, analyses large volumes of data ensuring real-time information is quickly delivered to organisations that rely on up-to-date and accurate traffic reports, such as local authorities and emergency services across the capital.
As a result, this helps enable TfL, which is responsible for managing 580km of London’s busiest roads, including all 6,400 of its traffic signal junctions, to detect and respond to incidents efficiently, helping to improve road safety and minimise pollution and congestion across the city.
The new system is also designed to help TfL manage London’s road network during exceptionally busy periods, such as large-scale events.
“The transformative system produced from our work with Sopra Steria will enable TfL to manage our surface transport network much more effectively, and gives us a vital tool to keep London moving,” said Irfan Shaffi, operational control manager, TfL.
“This project within TfL’s wider Surface Intelligent Transport Systems (SITS) programme, in combination with the other technology tools in development, gives us excellent situational awareness and facilitates the strong green heartbeat needed to deliver upon the Mayor’s Transport Strategy.”
Adrian Fieldhouse, Managing Director, Government and Transport at Sopra Steria, said, “The development of a highly scalable and flexible transport solution will also prove invaluable as new technologies continue to emerge – future-proofing London’s traffic system for years to come.”
