2025: Regional Transport Success Stories

Vernon Everitt (Transport Commissioner for Greater Manchester) and Deloitte hosted a roundtable attended by leaders across the regional transport to discuss future trends and to launch the report  Regional Transport Success Stories | Deloitte UK

The wide ranging discussion covered topics as diverse as:

  • How to factor growth into Green Book Business Cases, and the future of the Green Book is in the context of devolved financial powers

  • Transport’s role as a major energy consumer, and how to optimise usage, for example by balancing night time bus charging with day time tram operation

  • Ensuring the talent pipeline of the future, recognising that authorities will need a broader range of skills and that these will be very different from today

The report itself looks at recent successes in the regional transport sector. It covers six themes:

  • How transport can enable growth, noting that success comes when key parts of the economy are linked effectively

  • The need for long term funding packages and financial innovation to fund upgrades

  • The power of local leadership, often via newly elected Mayors, in driving forward change

  • Improvements to customer experience require a long term commitment, with a focus on immediate benefit release

  • Authorities role as a data aggregator, driving integrated transport by setting the data standards and deploying the tools to allow for seamless travel

  • The challenges of implementing zero emission transport, including the choice between Hydrogen and battery powered buses

The report finishes with a maturity matrix to allow authorities to score themselves against themes.
